Time and time again: 'live' television commentary and the construction of replay talk

Article Abstract:

Television programs often entice viewers with the notion of live coverage of events, especially sports programs. Sports broadcasts have a language of their own, as broadcasters describe what the viewers can see on their screens and offer commentary on it, creating a free-flowing discourse on the public spectacle. Often such programs are interrupted by obviously taped episodes of programming, such as broadcasts of past events and taped interviews with participants.

In pursuit of the ineffable: how television found the eclipse by lost the plot

Article Abstract:

A live broadcast of an eclipse on the BBC on August 11, 1999 illustrated the problems of live broadcasts. The televised event was shown over and over after the live broadcast, but never gained the meaning it had for people who really experienced the celestial event.
