Of birthdays and begging bowls

Article Abstract:

The celebration by the British Broadcasting Corporation Ltd. (BBC) of 60 years of broadcasting in 1996 provides it with an opportunity to look to the government for increased funding but the timeliness might not be as good as it looks. On the plus side as well as the birthday hype there has been debate about major sports event coverage being lost to satellite channels and it is the end of the Peacock Committee's recommended timespan for the licence fee as the source of funding, but all these factors are up against the approach to the general election and the lack of strong public warmth for the BBC.

Euro paean

Article Abstract:

One of the issues to be addressed at the European Audiovisual Conference in Birmingham, England, in Apr 1998 will be how to create large European media concerns able to compete internationally. Discussion on this subject will include debate about the reorganization of European backing for the audiovisual sector. There is a trend towards creating a system in which the largest, most dynamic European media concerns are supplied with funding to allow them to create larger and improved production activities and to market their production more extensively.

Public service TV in crisis

Article Abstract:

Public service broadcasting is under threat in many parts of the English-speaking world and needs to look at re-inventing itself. Both the Public Broadcasting System in the US and TVNZ in New Zealand have lost nearly all their public funding and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the South African Broadcasting Corporation are all facing battles with their national governments. The British Broadcasting Corporation remains relatively untouched.
