'Selling scandal': business and the media

Article Abstract:

Businesses and politicians in Britain have used mass media to promote themselves, and have also become more vulnerable to mass media because of scandal reporting. The media use scandals to attract audiences, and in recent years businesses and politicians have increasingly been included in this kind of negative coverage. Environmental and consumer groups have also attacked business. However, criticism still tends to be confined within relatively narrow definitions of what is ideologically acceptable.

Virtual soundbites: political communication in cyberspace

Article Abstract:

The Internet offers governments and political parties the possibility of direct communication with the public, bypassing the traditional mediatory role of journalism. The interactivity of the Internet promises to enhance political participation for ordinary citizens. Journalism has an important role to play, however, in insuring the quality of the information. Initiatives in the UK and the US are discussed.
