West indies on the pitch

Article Abstract:

Bristol, UK, is the home of a number of independent television production companies as well as the South of England regional headquarters of the British Boadcasting Corporation (BBC) and HTV West headquarters. HTV plans to increase its network output, and will broadcast new 6-episode series of 'Poldark'. The company is also planning 20 more high-profile dramas, aimed primarily at UK Independent Television, but also at the world market. The BBC is not expected to produce so much in Bristol in 1996, as it produced much of its 1996/97 output early.

Entering the mainstream

Article Abstract:

A campaign has been launched to end discrimination against disabled people within the media, including television. Portrayal of disabled people must be more positive. Many programmes regularly use able-bodied people to act as a disabled character and the campaign hopes to discourage this. The inclusion of disabled actors in successful soap operas would also raise the profile of the disabled. Efforts are being made within the industry, such as Channel 4's 1998 Travelog series which will be hosted by a disabled presenter.
