US submarine depends on Litton Ring Lasaer Gyro for accurate navigation in Arctic under-ice expedition

Article Abstract:

Litton Marine Systems has equipped the USS HAWKBILL (SSN 666) with its Sperry MK39 Mod 3 Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation system during its recent scientific expedition under the ice to the North Pole. The navigation subsystem was used as a vital attitude and heading sensor during the dangerous underwater winter transit of the Bering Sea. Litton Marine System said that the system delivers high-accuracy geographic position information, with or without GPS input, and precise attitude and heading data needed for fire control stabilization and weapons initialization.
