Anytime, anyplace, anywhere: US puts emphasis on Prompt Global Strike ability

Article Abstract:

Prompt Global Strike (PGS) was identified as a priority to attack targets anywhere in the world within even minutes of a decision to do so, without making any previous preparations, as a preventive action against rogue powers, terrorist networks and near-term competitors. The first generation PGS capability may be ready by 2009 and its vital attributes are promptness, reliability, survivability, persistence, technology, commitment and co-operation.

Nuclear family planning: Fewer, smaller and safer warheads for future generation

The role of the supercomputers supplied by IBM in the Life Extension Program is to simulate the ageing process in the nuclear explosive package in the warhead and predict its effect on the performance of chemical explosives used to compress the nuclear fission primary. The US might share some facilities with the UK as it proceeds into development of the RRW.

Several countries are acquiring airborne early warning and control systems to counter increasing threats from ballistic and cruise missiles. New systems and solutions are coming up to deal with the threat of stealthy or low-observable targets.
