The US navy is considering how to navigate the new strategic landscape outlined by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, as it examines how well it is prepared for the challenges of the next two to three decades. With intensive focus on future threats, Rumsfeld wants the services to prepare for more dynamic, frightening scenarios in years to come.

Domain defense: The Navy and Coast Guard began years ago to devise a national strategy for maritime security based on improved global intelligence

Article Abstract:

The White House is looking at plans that would strengthen the security of the nation's contiguous sea, waterways and ports. The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy have been crafting and joining together many of the basic building blocks of an overarching strategy on maritime security that aims to keep the law-abiding sailor from the anomalous threat.

Getting it right

Article Abstract:

The US Navy is preparing for the 2005 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) by considering its strategy, resources and processes. The Defense Secretary is planning to use the QDR to better prepare the US military to deal with new security challenges such as homeland defense and prosecuting a decodes-long campaign against terrorism.
