DCN, Thales agree joint venture plan

Article Abstract:

Thales and France have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to form a joint venture between Thales and government-owned DCN. The new public limited company, which is shared 50:50 and temporarily known as Societe de Systemes de Defense Navale (SSDN), is expected to be completed in 3d qtr 2001. SSDN will continue collaborative warship and combat system prime contract management business reflecting the growing demand for single prime contractors that can provide complete combat systems, platform and support package.

Concept study phase for FOAEW

Article Abstract:

Thales and BAE Systems have been awarded nine-month concept phase study contracts by UK for is Future Organic Airborne Early Wraning (FOAEW) requirement. Expected to enter service in 2012, the FOAEW is a kew program for the UK Royal navy and may influence forthcoming decisions on the Future Carrier and the Future Carrier Borne Aircraft. The two companies have been tasked to conduct studies that will define key program drivers relating to costs, schedules risks and performance.

Remainder of Venezuela's Lupos to be upgraded

Article Abstract:

Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding will upgrade four more of Venezuela's Lupo- class frigates, namely, General Urdaneta, General Soublette, General Salom and Almirante Garcia. The program will involve selected systems only and will not be a total modernization. The major component of the upgrade will be the fitting of 21HS-7 hull-mounted sonar to replace the aging EDO SQS- 29 hull sonar.
