The political landscape of the Middle East was altered radically as a result of the landslide victory of the Hamas in the Palestinian parliamentary elections held in January 2006 and the new ruling party in the Palestinian Authority (PA) has refused to alter its official position in the face of the US, the European Union and Arab pressure. Palestinian Islamic Jihad has announced that it will continue attacks against Israel, but remains guarded on what form this violence will take.
