Ethiopia's deployment to Somalia risks proxy war

Article Abstract:

Sharia court victories over the Somali Transitional Federal Government have prompted Ethiopia to bolster its forces in Western Somalia, which could provoke Eritrean involvement in the conflict and turn Somalia into a proxy battleground for the rivals. The threat of an Islamist offensive against the transitional government has however led Ethiopia to deploy hundreds of troops in the west of the country.

Article Abstract:

Some of the most sophisticated and lethal piracy attacks carried out by any group in Southeast Asia are presented. The assault on the M/V Ocean Silver and M/V Trimanggada by the Free Aceh Movement (Geraken Aceh Merdaka - GAM) have illustrated the group's technical knowledge of the ship and shipping industry and also its superior piracy tactics that are used to gain strategic advantage.

Somalia provides test case of counter terrorism efforts

Article Abstract:

The weakness of Somalia governing structures mean that it is still vulnerable to exploitation by extremist groups, despite few successes in countering the terrorist threat. The challenges faced by the government, as there is a high risk of extremism being propagated through education, and the capabilities required to overcome them are discussed.
