'Floating city' with own airport

Article Abstract:

USS 'Ronald Reagan' (CVN-76), the 'Nimitz' class aircraft carrier, is a transition platform incorporating several innovations and modifications towards the US Navy's next generation carrier (CVN-21). The carrier, with a displacement of over 100,000 tons and a power plant of over 1 MW, enough for a US town, is equipped with a redesigned superstructure, a precision tracking capability called Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC), a Ship Self Defence System (SSDS), and an improved flight deck.

A sinking feeling: US shipbuilding faces challenges

Article Abstract:

The economic prospects and various challenges faced by the American shipbuilding companies due to the decline in the U.S. Navy orders are discussed. There would be only four major shipbuilding orders under the upcoming fiscal year 2006 shipbuilding budget and other major ships planned for fiscal year 2008-2011 are cancelled under the Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's directive.

The importance of the US Navy's mine warfare, its Naval operations and programmes are presented. The Navy's mine sweepers in the Persian Gulf, augmented by continental US based MCM assets and Explosive Ordnance Disposal is key to clearing mines in the Khor Abd. Allah waterway during operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
