Indigenous destroyer extends China's reach - but it needs ASW help

Article Abstract:

China's People Liberation Army Navy received its first Luhai-class guided missile destroyer in Aug 1998. The 'Shenzhen,' which completed sea trials later in the same year, reperesents the latest domestically manufactured naval ships to be added to the country's blue water fleet. The destroyer is equipped with the 'Rice Shield' three-dimensional, G-band air search radar, a raar with a planar array antenna that is capable of computer- controlled vertical scanning.

DCN sets sights on 21st century competition

Article Abstract:

Shipbuilding company Direction de Constructions Navales of France has launched a two-pronged corporate reorganization to boost its position as the French Navy's major equipment supplier of associated services and to control 25% - 30% of the global naval shipbuilding market by 2002. Among the components of the program is the steady reduction in its workforce and the revamp of its business relationship with the Delegation General pour l'Armament.

Hunting Goliath in the age of asymmetric warfare

Article Abstract:

The ability to strike decisively using disproportionate means is critical to the evolution of future naval forces. The asymmetric threat is further aggravated by the proliferation of new generation of highly advanced, low- cost and reliable systems. Among these are advanced non-nuclear submarine technologies, ant-shi[ cruise missiles and sea mines, weapons of mass destruction, information warfare and C4I systems.
