Iran under a new president: Heading where?

Article Abstract:

The presidency was the last holdout of Iran's reformals and the stunning victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in June 2005 as the new President gave total control of Iran's state institutions to hard-liners. In practical terms, the control of Iran's foreign policy, nuclear and economic policies, the judiciary, army, radio and television are in the hands of supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei and with the election of Ahmadinejad who is more closely tied to him, will be able to control the presidency.

Assad's dangerous gambit

Article Abstract:

Syrian President Bashar Assad and his top political echelon have started examining the viability of either going to war with Israel, or launching a limited military operation against it after the Lebanon War. Israel is also very determined not to repeat the harrowing experience of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, when the IDF was caught unawares by the joint attack launched by Syrian and Egyptian forces that inflicted heavy losses before being repelled.

Iran under a new president: Heading where?

Article Abstract:

Iran elected its new president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 24th June 2005 thinking that he would be a psychological blow to Iran's enemies. However, the control of Iran's foreign policy, nuclear policy, and the main economic policies would remain with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who already controlled the Parliament, the judiciary, the army, radio and television, making the new president's role unclear.
