The Italian ruling 'Casa delle Liberta' coalition had pledged to stabilize defence spending at 1.5% of GDP but the figure for 2005 is actually below 1% and the precarious state of national economy suggests that things will get worse in 2007-08. The outgoing Chief of Staff of the Italiaaitaly. armyn Army, General Giullo Fraticelli suggested that the current financial shortages make it imperative to use the scare available resources in the most cost-effective way, which is a self-evident truth.

A state of shock and awe on Rome's via XX September, where all the offices of the Defense Ministry, Defense General Staff, Defense General Secretariat and Army Staff are located, is justified as the current status and the future prospects of the Italian army are reviewed. Outgoing Chief of the Staff of the Italian Army Gen. Giulio Fraticelli suggested that the financial shortages make it imperative to use the scarce available resources in the most cost-effective way.

Lieutenant General Filiberto Cecchi, Chief of Staff of the Italian Army discusses and defines the main roles and missions of their forces and comments on current assets and future-oriented procurement programmes. He believes that the profound and continuous commitment of the Italian Army in international and homeland security tasks revealed the need for technical upgrades in many fields, such as combat power, fire support and logistics.
