Karzai dismisses Ismail Khan

Article Abstract:

Afghan President Hamid Karzai's dismissal of regional strongman Ismail Khan as a governor of western Herat province has marked his boldest move to assert himself as a leader capable of exerting power beyond Kabul. The move against in western Afghanistan and facing down the ensuing street protests appears to have successfully lanced president challenge to central authority while bolstering Karzai's own standing in the Pushtun south, his main source of electoral support.

Karzai appoints new Afghan security chief

Article Abstract:

A young Tajik from Panjshir valley, supposed to be close to the Afghan President, is appointed as the head of the National Security Directorate in place of the existing head. Though both the officials belong to the same tribe, they represent markedly different generations and hold divergent political views. The analysts, however, see the new chief as someone who is modern, forward looking and less influenced by ethnic issues.

Ahmadshah Massoud, the 'Lion of Panjshir,' assassinated

Article Abstract:

Ahmadshah Massoud, the leader of the anti-Taliban United Front, has been assassinated by two Arabs who apparently had ties with the Al-Qaeda organization. It is believed that the morale of the United Front forces will be badly shaken by the loss of their popular leader.
