Marine air in the mainstream

Article Abstract:

An overview of the contribution of the US Marine Corps aviation in US war efforts is presented with particular reference to the role played by the Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF) in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Although Marine aviators continue to believe that their main job is to provide support to the Marines on the ground, they have participated in joint operations in World War II and that OIF has witnessed an unprecedented integration of the Marine Corps aviation into a joint force.

Expeditionary fighter

Article Abstract:

Air Force officials believe that the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) F-35 would give the Air Force an opportunity to have a dedicated close air support aircraft in the future, which marks the first time the service has announced plans to buy a STOVL-type aircraft that would support ground troops. However, concerns remain regarding whether the kind of operational advantages provided by STOVL are essential for meeting 21st century Air Force mission.
