Navy puts aegis ballistic missile defenses on alert in Pacific: antimissile force to comprise 18 ships by end of 2006 as part of "layered defense.''

Article Abstract:

The regional ballistic missile defense system (BMDS) communications code transmits data to other elements of the BMDS command-and control network. This system is developed to provide an integrated layered defense against ballistic missiles of all ranges and regions across the world in all phases of light. It is also reported that five Pacific Fleet Aegis destroyers will have operational LRS&T upgrades installed by the end of the year 2004 and a total of 15 LRS&T Aegis destroyers and three Aegis BMD engagement cruisers by the end of 2006 as part of the initial deployment of the BMDS.

KEI now seen as multipurpose missile defense weapon: Navy assessing submarines, Aegis cruisers as possible basing modes for interceptor

Article Abstract:

The Kinetic energy Interceptor (KEI), a developmental weapon which was designed principally to intercept hostile missiles in the first, or boost, phase of attack that can last for as little as 180 seconds, is cast as a leading player in the Pentagon's Defense System. Official's agency convinced that Missile Defense Agency (MDA) selection of the missile could be a capable performer in the ascent and midcourse phases of a missile attack.
