Republic of crime: Separatist regions and smuggling in Georgia

Article Abstract:

South Ossetia and Abkhazia are the primary criminal heavens within Georgia, which has complex array of goods trafficked through the country in a variety of directions, and Adjaria and the Pankilsi Gorge have thriving underworld operations. The organized crime gangs use these regions which are weak in law enforcement as base to organize drug trafficking and counterfeit goods and money, and weapons.

President Vladimir VoroninEs government is fighting a two-pronged battle to cut MoldovaEs infamous international sex trafficking, and to control the virtual criminal state of the Trans-Dniestr Moldovan Republic (TDMR) in the east. However, the Moldovan underworld is becoming more powerful and organized and has learned different ways to respond to and exploit the poverty of Moldova.

A dirty business: Nuclear smuggling in former Soviet states

Article Abstract:

The huge volume of weapons-grade plutonium and highly enriched uranium available in Russia that can potentially be used for making nuclear devices is a cause for concern. The seizure of highly enriched uranium in Georgia in 2006 underlies the continuing threat of proliferation of nuclear materials as do the large number of possible sources in the former Soviet Union.
