The coast guardEs closest point of approach to maritime homeland security

Article Abstract:

Coast Guards were transferred to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and realigned with 21 other agencies into the new federal department to protect the American people from another terrorist attack. With the strong support of DHS and the department of Transportation, the Coast guard is able to implement the presidentEs strategy for maritime homeland security and maintain its operational excellence.

The forward edge of drug interdiction: LEDETs extend the long arm of maritime law enforcement

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the Coast Guard's use of interagency cooperation involving the Navy and the Customs Service in enforcing maritime law. The Coast Guard law-enforcement detachments are being deployed on Navy warships without constraints of the 'Posse Comitatus' law that limits direct DOD participation in law-enforcement operations.
