Main battle tanks

Article Abstract:

A discussion on current developments and future trends affecting main battle tanks is presented. US Army Chief of Staff Gen Eric K Shinseki claims that the M1A2 Abrams tank is unequaled and is expected to fulfill its role in the most intense, direct-fire battles envisioned. While the US advantage in the heavy tank divisions is still assured, the costs and efforts necessary to sustain heavy tanks once deployed are significant. A discussion on the current trends in the development of tanks in other countries is also presented.

The vanishing authority of field command

Article Abstract:

Following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon building in September 2001, emphasis has been laid on the nature of civil-military relations and how previous political leaders faced military crises and learned to deal with uniformed subordinates. Three cases are presented as examples of the complexities involved in civil-military relations. These include issues such as refusal of acceptance of orders received by military commanders from higher authority, acceptance of political decisions contrary to the individual's perception of the country's best interests, and the subjection of an officer to contravening decisions by his national superiors, all of which make evident the necessity for cooperation and respect in civil-military relations.
