Why did Donald Rumsfeld fail? The man hired to transform the Pentagon could not change himself

Article Abstract:

Donald Rumsfeld was the secretary of defense with a reputation of being a distinguished public servant and a man of great integrity who enjoyed mandate from the U.S. President George W. Bush, as well as an exceptional loyalty. He was the man hired to change the American way of war but it was a tragedy that he went to war in Iraq with the Army, but when he resigned he left his office with the same Army and same strategy as he could not set aside his preconceptions.

New face: Same choices

Article Abstract:

The new defense secretary nominee Robert Gates who replaces Donald Rumsfeld after the November 2006 elections faces the same challenges that Rumsfeld faced, as well as the same constraints. Some of the challenges faced by him include issues related to Iraq War, the unpleasant realities in Afghanistan, while he also faces the fact that the US has yet to formulate a coherent strategy for the political future of the Islamic world.
