The army of Slovakia placed in May 1998 an order for 38+2 155-millimeter Zuzana self-propelled artillery systems, which will establish Slovakia as the first ex-Warsaw-Pact country to adopt an artillery system that satisfies the standards set by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO. Uganda pays over the odds for tanks that will not work

Article Abstract:

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has ordered an investigation into an apparently anomalous purchase of T-55 tanks from Eastern Europe. The 90-tank deal was estimated to cost $35 million even as only five of the tanks arrived in working condition. One official said that a tank in the deal cost $450,000, although the top price of a T-55, with spares, is typically about $50,000 in Eastern Europe.
