Effects of recession

Article Abstract:

The recession has resulted in nationwide cuts in welfare benefits. Most states reduced benefits from welfare programs such as the general assistance program, emergency cash assistance and the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC). The cuts in AFDC benefits range from 4.4% in California to 7% inMaryland. Also affected by the states' tight budget was the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training Program (JOBS) which was part of the 1988 welfare reform act. Funding for the project was short, although state officials claimed that the JOBS program was being implemented with success despite budget constraints.
