For now, Microsoft can't save itself

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp. shares may or may not recover from the federal government ruling which would break the company up into two separate entities. The company, however, is unable to buy back its own stock at a bargain price because of its Jan. 2000 purchase of Software company Visio. The acquisition deal made use of a pooling-of-interests transaction with Microsoft stock which disallows Microsoft to buy back its own shares until June 7, 2000.

Explaining (or Not) Why the Boss Is Paid So Much

Article Abstract:

Catholic Funds chairman Daniel J. Steininger has proposed limiting CEO compensation at seven companies to no more than 100 times the pay of average workers. He is challenging the justification for paying executives excessively without determining how much they contribute to their companies good fortune and success. The SEC will decide if the proposal has merit and should be subjected to shareholder votes at Cendant, Compuware, Delta Air Lines, El Paso Corp., International Paper, Sun Microsystems, and Viacom.
