Future's bleak for small PC makers

Article Abstract:

Small makers of personal computers face a difficult year in 2001, with several being driven out of business due to slowing sales and price wars driven by larger competitors. Rob Enderle, an analyst with researcher Giga Information Group, expects all the marginal players to be gone by yearend 2001. The industry was hit hard by sluggish sales in 2000. The home computer market dropped 12% year-over-year as consumers bought personal digital assistants, DVD players and cellphone instead of computers.

An economic slump could dampen Motorola's recovery efforts, and could result in the company's first quarterly operating loss in 16 years. The world's second-largest cellular phone maker had previously announced in Jan 2001 that earnings for the quarter ending Mar 30 would drop from 20 cents to 12 cents per share while revenues of $8.8 billion would be flat. The company is also planning to sell or close four manufacturing plants to cut costs.
