Earnings beat expectations, Applied Materials reports

Applied Materials beat analyst's expectations reporting 2 cents a share more than anticipated. The semiconductor manufacturer reported third-quarter earnings at $1.33 billion, down from $2.73 billion during the same period last year.

Microsoft puts off introduction of Xbox game console in Japan

Article Abstract:

Microsoft is delaying the sale of its Xbox video game in Japan until February 22, 2002. Sales will begin in the U.S. November 8. The company found the simultaneous marketing campaign in both Japan and North America daunting as it struggled to build the console from scratch within 2 years. Japanese company Namco will develop 4 new games for the Xbox. Nintendo also has experienced product delays of games. Microsoft plans a $500 million marketing campaign for the Xbox.

Hewlett aims to replace the print shop; computer maker seeks big commercial market

Article Abstract:

The proposed $24 billion merger between Hewlett-Packard Co. and Compaq Computer Corp. would not only allow the company to compete in offering technology consulting but would boost PC sales and sales of data-serving computers. The merger would also allow H-P to carry its dominance of the desktop-printer market into the offset-press arena. Propelled by H-P board member Richard A. Hackborn, the printing division of H-P has become the world's leading vendor of desktop printers. Now Hackborn, a backer of the Compaq merger, hopes to convince coporations to print reports and catalogs themselves on new H-P high-speed digital presses.
