New investments challenge mutual funds

Article Abstract:

Financial service companies have developed attractive alternatives to mutual funds, which already control $7.3 trillion in assets of the market. These mutual-fund like investments include exchange-traded funds, managed accounts and online protfolios. They can be attractive to investors for they do not have the problems associated to putting money in mutual funds such as relatively high annual expenses and big taxable payouts.

Load vs. no-load funds: it's a question of paying for advice

Article Abstract:

Load mutual funds do not perform better than no-load mutual funds. US diversified funds sold through brokers and advisers earned an average 148%, before commissions, between 1995 and 2000. No-load funds also have an average 1.22% expense ratio compared to 1.63% for load funds. The sales charge will also help investors determine whether they should invest in no-load or load funds. Investors should also check to see if the fund they have selected has a redemption fee. They might also want to compare their funds with a similar fund.
