I.B.M. device raises storage of tiny PC's

Article Abstract:

The matchbook-sized 1GB IBM Microdrive will be available this fall for $499. The drive is designed to fit in flash memory card slot in consumer devices like digital cameras and MP3 players. IBM engineered the hard drive to withstand a 1500-G shock. This drive represents an increase in storage density from last year's 5.04 bil bits per square inch to 15.2 bil bits per square inch. Tiqit Computers is the first to announce an order for the device, which it plans to use in its Matchbox PC.

New I.B.M. disk drive is ready

Article Abstract:

IBM announces it will ship its $100,000 to $750,000 Direct Access Storage Device disk drive, the 3390, starting on Dec 1, 1989. Analysts predict the surprise move will help IBM recoup lost revenue caused by the 3390's earlier delay. The 3390 can hold 3.78 billion to 60 billion characters, three times as much as IBM's 3380K disk drive. The new drives can transfer information 40 percent faster than current drives. IBM expects to ship 3,000 to 5,000 of the drives by the end of 1989.
