3Com Corp's financial difficulties are caused by inventory problems, slower-than-expected sales and falling product prices. The Palm Computing Division, which is tasked with the manufacture of hand-held computers, is the only line of business that reported positive growth. Hence, the company decided to spin off its Palm division by distributing Palm shares to 3Com shareholders. With the announcement of this plan, investors started buying 3Com stocks that boosted share price significantly.

Microsoft faces wireless test with Pocket PC

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp on Apr 19, 2000 introduces a new version of its Windows CE software, called Pocket PC, aimed at the hand-held computer market. Designed to compete against Palm computing devices, the Pocket PC has additional features that allow users to access the Internet, play music, view video clips, read electronic books and download street maps directly into the organizer. The Pocket PC will sell for $300-$500, which is about the same as the latest Palm devices.
