Legislators feel trade-bill pressure

Article Abstract:

The fate of the trade bill that will grant permanent normal trade status for China rests on perhaps 36 undecided House Democrats who hold the key to its approval when it comes up for a vote in the week of May 22, 2000. The battle for the approval of these 36 legislators is expected to become increasingly intense as the date for the vote approaches. The bill would end the existing practice where Congress reviews China's trade status each year, and give China normal trade status permanently. This would ease the Asian country's long sought entry into the World Trade Organization.
