Supercomputing takes yet another turn

Article Abstract:

The evolution of the supercomputer has gone through many changes since its inception and is now heading for a more simplified model. Instead of supercomputer taking up whole rooms in the 1960's, they have now shrunk to the Internet or something as small as a PC yet still able to perform the same types of calculations.

Sales of PC's down sharply at Gateway; 30% decline is shown on crucial weekend

Article Abstract:

Computer-maker Gateway announced that it is likely to miss projections on the current quarter and for next year too, citing a 30% drop in its sales over Thanksgiving as compared to sales over Thanksgiving last year. Consumer demand worldwide has slowed, executives acknowledged, and they foresee sales declining next quarter and ending up flat for next year.

Grim reports from Hewlett and Gateway

Article Abstract:

Gateway 2000 Inc. has announced very disappointing fourth-quarter sales and earnings figures. Hewlett-Packard Co. has also announced lower-than-expected revenue growth statistics for the fiscal quarter ending Jan. 31, 2001. Gateway has also announced layoffs of up to 2,400 jobs worldwide. Both computer companies are suffering from a slowing US economy and lessening market demand for their products and services.
