Small beer brewers furiously rolled out barrels in '90s

Article Abstract:

The number of small beer brewers in the US rose 173% to 529 between 1992 and 1997, a growth faster than any other category of manufacturers in the country. The figures, which is based on data released by the government, do not include 'brewpub' restaurants making beer on-site. According to Assn of Brewers, sales of domestic craft brews increased 2%, to around 5.7 million barrels from 1998. However, craft brewers' share of the total beer market remained flat at 2.9%.

Wal-Mart's influence grows. Retailer's power touches everything from prices to wages

Article Abstract:

Some experts believe that Wal-Mart's efforts to keep prices low for its customers is helping to keep the U.S. inflation rate low too. The company is also developing its own brands of consumer goods, including dog food, vitamins, etc. and is even expanding into banking, used cars, travel, and Internet access. The company accounts for as much as 25 percent of the U.S. productivity gains between 1995-1999.

Internet banks offer virtually everything to start-ups

Internet banks and online loan brokers are focusing their marketing efforts to lure small businesses away from traditional commercial banks. Virtual banks have chosen to target this market segment because it covers over 23 million potential customers with more than 75% using credit. To attract these clients, online banks and loan brokers offer better interest rates on loans and deposits they make.
