Software to help introduce products: the wisdom - if not the wit - of 30 experts in management

Business Resource Software Inc's $495 Business Insight decision support software is designed to help businesses plan the release of new products. The company even used the system to determine how to introduce its own product. Business Insight includes a knowledge base built around the expertise of 30 experts in management theory. It has a good user interface that presents hundreds of questions about the market, the business, finances and the product. Users indicate that it provides an excellent overview for managers, regardless of whether it actually is used to decide on the timing of a product introduction. It helps clarify thinking, highlight inconsistencies and point out strengths and weaknesses in logic of a business's handling of product development, introduction and marketing. Potential users should be aware that it takes several hours to answer all the questions.

Technical support, the way the big software companies do it: a new CD-ROM program gives users inside information for solving problems

Article Abstract:

Ziff Communications Co's Computer Library division offers a CD-ROM database that contains technical support and troubleshooting tips called Support on Site for Applications, and nicknamed S.O.S. The product offers technical support information on over 25 common software applications and systems including Windows, DOS, Paradox, Lotus 1-2-3, WordPerfect, Pagemaker and Word for Windows. Although support for Apple Macintosh software, System 7, OS/2 and other systems is not included, the company is currently negotiating with many software companies to expand the products supported on S.O.S. Users report that S.O.S. improves support quality and saves time, allowing employees to spend more time on system development. Computer Library publishes S.O.S. each month, with a yearly subscription charge of $1,295 for a single user. A network version is priced at $4,995.
