Article Abstract:

The Sony Aibo is a dog-like robot operated by a 32-bit RISC processor and 32 MB of RAM. Additional sets of 'personality attributes' are available for $90 per set, on an 8MB memory stick. Sony developed the operating system Aibo uses, called Open-R. The device has a digital camera for eyes, microphones for ears, and infrared sensors for navigation. It responds to voice commands, and modifies its behavior according to praise or censure. Most users find themselves developing an emotional attachment to the mechanical pet.
