A more peaceful future

Article Abstract:

The US has purchased highly-enriched uranium (HEU) from Russia. HEU is salvaged from dismantled nuclear weapons and can be mixed with low-enriched uranium as fuel in nuclear power plants. The purchase done under START terms guarantees world peace by removing weapons-grade uranium and plutonium. It is beneficial for the US because nuclear material can be used for peaceful means such as producing electricity and less new uranium is mined. On the other hand, Russia and other former Soviet republics receive cash in exchange for the uranium.

Diploid sporophytic tissue in the seed of Cupressus sempervirens L

Article Abstract:

Conifer seeds contain a female endosperm, which is usually haploid. Biochemical analysis shows the Cupressus sempervirens seeds contain nonembryonic tissue as well. This tissue expresses at the isozyme gene locus, and is diploid. The origin of this tissue and why it appears only in the Mediterranean cypress remains unknown.
