Foreign investment and environmental regulations in LDCs

Article Abstract:

An active environmental policy combined with a liberal policy on foreign investment provides an optimal approach for less developed countries. This is evident in a study of the welfare and policy effects of pollution taxes and foreign capital quotas for a small developing economy using a simple, general equilibrium model. It is also argued that the host country may find it beneficial to charge a pollution tax equal to the pure Pigovian tax. The optimal policy combination therefore would be a pollution tax above marginal environmental damage along with free flow of foreign capital.

Global impacts of the Kyoto agreement: results from the MS-MRT model

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the global economic implications of the Kyoto agreement on carbon emissions control using a multi-sector, multi-region trade model which was designed with emphasis on the climate change policy's international trade aspects such as the impacts on economic welfare, investments and international trade. Results show that the welfare of industrial and some developing countries are negatively affected by emission control policies.

The Clean Air Act's sulfur dioxide emissions market: estimating the costs of regulatory and legislative intervention

Article Abstract:

A dynamic linear programming model was used to measure the economic effects of direct and indirect intervention in the sulfur dioxide allowance trading market by the Clean Air Act Amendment. Actual legislative proposals in New York and Wisconsin are taken as an example of direct intervention. Indirect intervention is studied using a cost-uncertainty tradeoff curve. Both direct and indirect intervention are costly.
