On the Use of Replacements to Extend System Life

Article Abstract:

The problem addressed is to schedule the replacement of a vital component with spares so the system is available as long as possible. Cost of inspection, parts, and failure are not considered. The problem can be generalized to include systems with several vital components where each component is treated independently. An optimal schedule is developed.

Inspection Policies for Fault Location

Article Abstract:

Locating failed parts often requires a sequence of tests. Each test identifies the state of a component, good or bad. If testing stops when a failed component is found, then the order of testing is important. Several inspection sequences and their consequences are discussed. Conditional probability tables and network diagrams are included.

Some Reliability Applications of the Variability Ordering

Article Abstract:

The variability ordering of random variables has been an important topic recently. A preservation property of ordering under random sized sums is proven. It is applied to branching process and a Poisson shock model.
