Article Abstract:

The problem addressed is to schedule the replacement of a vital component with spares so the system is available as long as possible. Cost of inspection, parts, and failure are not considered. The problem can be generalized to include systems with several vital components where each component is treated independently. An optimal schedule is developed.

Locating failed parts often requires a sequence of tests. Each test identifies the state of a component, good or bad. If testing stops when a failed component is found, then the order of testing is important. Several inspection sequences and their consequences are discussed.
