Portrait of an emerging industry

Article Abstract:

The deregulation of the electricity markets has led to an industry-wide restructuring that has changed the shape of the energy service companies (ESCO) sector. Three trends have become apparent as the pace of change in the ESCO sector accelerates: the market share of independent ESCOs has fallen, utility-owned ESCOs and retail ESCOs have grown in number, while performance contracting has become less important. ESCOs have also been exploring the emerging industrial market, hoping to supplement their income from the traditional institutional market that accounts for 60% of revenues.

Adding a new line

Article Abstract:

Analysts have given their approval to such a strategy, citing utilities' brand names as a means of giving leverage to telecommunication services. In addition, an investment in the telecommunication business is a significant boost to a utility's earnings per share in the long run, given its core competencies and the maximized use of its rights of way, fiber-optic cable and sales channels.
