EUROPE: ADHESIVES INDUSTRY OPTIMISTIC

Article Abstract:

European adhesives producers expect a recovery of demand after 1999, as the applications of adhesives are expanding, e.g. in the fields of electronics and transportation. For 1999 the European industry expects stagnation. The Association of European Adhesives Manufacturers (Feica) reports that in 1998 the consumption of adhesives in western Europe amounted to 1.615mn tonnes. Dispersions accounted for 40% of the total, hotmelts 15%, solvent-based products 14%, reactive products 10%, natural polymers 6%, and water-borne products 4%. The value of the market was EUR 3.348bn. 27% of the total was accounted for by the paper and packaging sectors, 20% by the construction sector, 18% DIY, 12% assembly, 10% wood processing, 8% transportation and 5% footwear and leather. Germany has the highest per capita consumption of adhesives, at 6.02 kg per year, followed by Switzerland 5.83 kg, Denmark 5.36 kg, Belgium 5.18 kg and Sweden 5.15 kg. The lowest rates in western Europe are in Spain at 3.3 kg, Ireland 3.4 kg, Portugal 3.53 kg, Austria 3.7 kg and the UK 3.8 kg.
