SWITZERLAND/GERMANY: RHEIN BIOTECH/ROCHE R&D

Article Abstract:

Rhein Biotech and Roche of Switzerland are extending their cooperation in research and development. The two companies have already been exchanging knowhow in the development of recombinant protein production technologies. Now Roche is granting Rhein Biotech the right to use the Aspergillus Sojae expression technology for the production of proteins. In return, Roche will get access to Rhein Biotech's Hansenula production technology for the development of industrial enzymes, and Roche Diagnostics GmbH of Mannheim will be able to use the yeast technology of Rhein Biotech for diagnostics.

Switzerland/UK: Chemical companies to swap divisions

Article Abstract:

Swiss producer of speciality chemicals Clariant will take over the brake fluid activities from BP Chemicals. Clariant's site for the production and research of brake fluids is in German Gendorf/Burgkirchen. In return for the above acquisition, BP Chemicals, a leading producer of butyl glycol ether and butyl glycol acetate, will take over the butyl glycol ether division of Clariant. BP's production plants are based in Lavera, France.

CANADA/US: MERCK RELOCATES PRODUCTION

Article Abstract:

Within the restructuring of its laboratory business in North America, Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, is closing production at its Canadian subsidiary BDH Inc. in Toronto. The production will be taken over by the company's US plants in Norweed and Gibbstown. EM Industries will take over parts of administration.
