Conditions required for a law on active voluntary euthanasia: a survey of nurses' opinions in the Australian Capital Territory

Article Abstract:

A series of vignettes and a checklist of conditions have been used to consider the conditions that nurses in the Australian Capital Territory believe should be in an active voluntary euthanasia (AVE) law. These conditions have been compared with those in the AVE legislation which has been proposed in Australia. It appears that there is widespread support among nurses for some, but not all, of the conditions in Australian AVE legislation. Further discussion must take place among legislators, the general public and health practitioners about which conditions should be included in any future AVE bills.

Ethics-committee authorization in Germany

Article Abstract:

The 1994 revision to the German Drug Law includes a provision that approval of an ethics committee is needed for carrying out clinical research with human subjects. An independent ethics committee must be set up according to state law. The state government cannot transfer exclusive medical authority to their respective medical associations. Although the legislation fails to clear up the confusion over public versus private ethics committees, the requirement of independence does seem to suggest that the medical associations cannot be given a monopoly over the ethics committees.
