A step towards sanity

Article Abstract:

The Pentagon announced on Feb 16, 1996, that it will put more emphasis on developing short-range theater missile defenses (TMD) and less emphasis on long-range ballistic missile defenses (BMD). The change in strategy was enacted because new intelligence information shows short-range missiles are a greater threat at the current time. The new policy will also make it more likely that Russia will agree to reductions in its nuclear arsenal as specified under START II. Unfortunately, Sen Bob Dole opposes the reorientation and may make it a campaign issue, which could jeopardize START II.

CWC: election year casualty?

Article Abstract:

The US' nonparticipation in the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) will compromise its credibility in weapon non-proliferation and weaken the CWC. Adoption of the CWC would illegalize the development, production, transfer and stockpiling of chemical weapons. US' participation was compromised when Republican presidential candidate Robert Dole expressed support for poison pill amendments. Dole's position on chemical weapons was allegedly influenced by campaign supporters.

Tokyo terror and chemical arms control

Article Abstract:

The nerve gas attack in Tokyo has spread fear in Japan. The prime suspect for the tragedy is the Aum Shinrikyo sect that believes in annihilation before redemption. This attack indicates the need for the Chemical Weapons Convention to be ratified.
