Bosnia II: a Turkish critique

Article Abstract:

Turkey needs to send a message to the UK that British inactivity in the former Yugoslavia may harm the country's relations with Moslem states. After the Gulf War, Turkey tried to establish close contacts wit the disintegrating Yugoslavia but also concerned itself with Western relations.Due to deterioration in situation in Bosnia, Turkish policy underwent a change as the Moslem question was involved. It formulated a two-fold policy for West and Moslem countries and through NATO and OIC it tried to enlist member countries' support to respond positively towards Bosnian crisis. But its policy underwent change from early 1993 due to failure of peace plans.

Beyond 'bookkeeping': bringing human rights to Bosnia

Article Abstract:

International efforts to stop the war crimes of Bosnia amounted until the Dayton Agreement only to an accounting of what happened. Annex 6 of the Dayton Agreement established the Commission on Human Rights with an ombudsperson and a Human Rights Chamber. Article XIII of Annex 6 gives many other non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations human rights monitoring authority. Annex 10 gives coordination mechanisms. The Dayton Agreement is the best chance for peace in this troubled region.

Beyond the chaos

Article Abstract:

Russia's economic troubles of the late 1990s were precipitated by two events. The establishment of a currency board which promoted a limited rouble devaluation has interfered with supply and demand. The dismissal of Prime Minister Sergei Kiriyenko has interfered with the balance of power between the Russian presidency and its legislature.
