Cesar Chavez: a symbol of Hispanic rights

Article Abstract:

Chavez was born to a migrant worker family in Arizona in 1927 and he went on to become the champion of Hispanic agricultural workers and the founder of the United Farm Workers. Unable to finish school because of the constant movement of his family, Chavez literally read himself an education. He was influenced by the writings of such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas K. Gandhi. He successful forced CaLifornia growers to sign a contract with the migrants' union. He combined a hunger strike with a successful nation-wide grape boycott to achieve this. He was a charismatic leader who captured the support of political leaders such as Robert F. Kennedy as well as the ordinary consumer.

Hugo Chavez Frias was elected as the new president of venezuela in December 1998, effectively ending the Punto Fijo pacted political arrangement that had been in place for 40 years. The Punto Fijo arrangement was a pact between the center left Accion Democratica (AD), the Social Christian Party (COPEI) and the Democratic Republican Union (URD), to share power and oil wealth, regardless of who won the elections. However Venezuela faces certain constraints that will make democratic renewal more difficult, and the new president needs resources to be more equitably distribution and development strategies to be more sustainable.

An analysis is presented on civil rights for minorities, focusing on freedom of speech and religion, right of due process, and merit treatment for the prevention of discrimination. The article justifies these rights from the perspective of the dominant paradigm or social group, demonstrating how civil rights for all produce a generalized beneficial effect for all.
