Frederick Douglass and the origin of black history month

Article Abstract:

Frederick Douglas was a great leader of the emancipation movement of the 19th century and was the first to demand freedom for blacks. Douglass' autobiography, 'Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave,' reveals the inhuman nature of life under slavery. Douglass used every opportunity to assert blacks' independence and held many official positions in the post-slavery era.

The National Convention: then and now

Article Abstract:

The National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) always holds an annual convention. The experience of an NAACP delegate while attending the conference in 1963 in Chicago, IL, is narrated. Many blacks experienced hostility and had found it difficult to find accommodations and rest room service during the Chicago convention.

Frederick Douglass: the greatest civil rights leader who ever lived

Article Abstract:

A profile of Edward S. Jackson, Jr. and excerpts from his award-winning essay are presented. Jackson won 'The Crisis' magazine's 'Greatest Civil Rights Leader Who Ever Lived' essay contest. He was presented with a $10,000 scholarship from Anheuser Busch Co. for writing an essay on Frederick Douglass.
