Individual accountability for crimes against humanity: reckoning with the past, thinking of the future

Article Abstract:

The case of former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet has revived the interest on the matter of individual responsibility for crimes of international law. Many hurdles need to be overcome to implement the principle of accountability in the prosecution of crimes of international law. Prosecution of crimes against humanity cannot be restricted to specific situations in particular countries. It would be better if the entire international community participate in the treaty to create the International Criminal Court.
