NATO unveils 'strategic concept' at 50th anniversary summit

Article Abstract:

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has revealed a strategic concept at a summit in Washington to celebrate NATO's 50th anniversary. The aim is to uphold democratic values and guarantee security in Europe. a shift away from the collective defense role of the cold war era. There are nine countries seeking to join NATO, and memebrship has not been granted to any of these, though expansion is likely at a later date. Russia is concerned about the expansion of NATO.

CFE compliance report issued; treaty adaptation talks continue

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration has released a report citing Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia and Azerbaijan for noncompliance with the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty. The report claims that the countries mentioned committed different violations ranging from maintenance of treaty-limited equipment in excess of CFE limits to denial of full access during inspections. However, those violations are deemed militarily insignificant by the report.

CFE parties agree on 'Basic Elements' for negotiating adaptation accord

Article Abstract:

The effort to reduce the amount of Europe's conventional weapons was addressed in Jul 23, 1997 in the signing of a document by 30 states-parties. The document which was initiated in the 1990 Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty, particularly focused on the acceptable ground-based treaty-limited equipment. Certain key issues remain unresolved, however, but negotiations are aimed for completion by Apr 1999.
