Political paralysis

Article Abstract:

Bangladesh's achievements in various social and economic indicators since it gained independence from Pakistan in 1971 are among the best in south Asia, but the constant alternation of governments in the country continues to undermine the consolidation of democracy. The campaign for the general election scheduled for January 2007 is shadowed by accusations of corruption and the deployment of troops on the streets, and there is concern that the military might again try to take over the government.

Noisy neighbors

Article Abstract:

The situation in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh reflects a failure of state building, though with subtle differences. India's interest in Baluchistan differs from its concerns in Nepal, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh where anxiety is over the significant foreign presence in the province, the hub of intense US military activity against terrorist targets in neighboring Afghanistan.

Monarchy & Mao

Article Abstract:

Successive governments in Kathmandu, Nepal have indulged in gaining control on the spoils of power rather than rectifying the massive social and economic problems faced by the bulk of the population. They proved unable to tackle the challenge Maoists posed, partly because the Maoists argued that the political parties did not actually hold power, which rests with the king.
