Primary colours: nasty, brutish and short?

Article Abstract:

Presidential primaries in the US distort the discussion of national issues. Most are party primaries in which the candidate's goal is to win a majority of the party's voters, not of the whole electorate. The media is another distorting factor as most media attention is focused on just a few primaries and a campaign can be badly damaged if the candidate does not do as well as pundits predicted. Since some of these primaries happen in states where extreme opinions are popular, the advantage of appealing to such voters is great. The primary system guarantees that media coverage and public disucssion will concentrate on issues of little relevance to most in the US.

After Monica: sex, lies, and Clinton

Article Abstract:

President Clinton is struggling to gain control of a sex scandal which could end his presidency but the public seems to be on his side with his approval rating at its highest level. These developments have left Clinton powerless and the Republican Congress has rejected almost all his policy initiatives. Furthermore, news organizations are competing for stories, resulting in lower standards of journalism.

Dollar power

Article Abstract:

Issues are discussed regarding the power of fund raisers and those who donate funds in presidential campaigns. . The main reason for the failure of campaign reform thus far is the 1974 Supreme Court case of Buckley v. Valeo, which ruled political contributions to be protected by the freedom of speech.
