Relating social inequalities in health and income

Article Abstract:

Jennifer M. Mellor and Jeffrey Milyo's analysis of the connection between income inequality and health is criticized for inadequate appreciation of the individual factors producing the disparities in health and of the centrality of social disparities in health to problems of population health in the US and elsewhere.

Valuing charity

Article Abstract:

Medicare and Medicaid as the reason for physicians' failure to provide adequate charity care is discussed. The programs eroded the ethic that treatment should be available regardless of ability to pay, also reducing the interest of teaching hospitals in providing care to the uninsured poor.
